Confucius Institute Graz celebrates the beginning of the Year of the Fire Horse with music, dance, and traditional Chinese cuisine.
On 27 February, the Confucius Institute Graz hosted its annual Chinese New Year Celebration in the Aula of the University of Graz. Numerous guests accepted the invitation to welcome the new year with an evening of music, dance, and traditional Chinese cuisine, while gaining insights into Chinese culture and traditions.
The event was officially opened by Rector Dr Peter Riedler, Kristin Orthacker, President of the Soroptimist International Club Graz Rubin, and City Councillor Manfred Eber, representing Mayor Elke Kahr. This was followed by a traditional lion dance performed by students of the Confucius Classroom Weiz. In Chinese culture, the lion dance symbolizes good fortune, prosperity, and a successful start to the new year.
The evening's musical programme featured Chinese musicians performing on traditional instruments, alongside performances by the HIB.art Choir and the Graz University Orchestra. The official programme concluded with remarks by Dr Wan Jie Chen, Director of the Confucius Institute Graz, who, together with the institute's team, welcomed guests to continue the evening in a relaxed atmosphere.
Guests were then invited to enjoy a selection of traditional Chinese specialties.
Proceeds from ticket sales will support projects of the Soroptimist International Club Graz Rubin, linking the celebration of the Chinese New Year with a commitment to social engagement in the region.
